Fines for late returns and lost or damaged loans
You will be charged with a fine or a compensation, if you
- fail to return or renew your loans by the deadline
- you lose or damage a book or other materials.
Make sure to pay on time in order to avoid further costs.
It is always your own responsibility to keep track of your return dates and fines. Check your loans by logging on to your user here at our website or via the app Biblioteket.
Fines if you fail to return a loan in time

Books borrowed at the same day and with the same return date cost you only 1 fine, if you return or renew them late but on the same date.
The fines are set by the Frederiksberg Municipal Council who manages all payments.
Consequences if you don't return a loan or pay your fines
If you have not returned a material within 30 days, you will be charged a compensation fee as well as a your fine of 230/115 DKK. The compensation fee will be set by the library at the price for a new copy.
If you return the material immediately, the compensation fee will be fee annulled.
- If you owe more than 200 DKK to the library, you are banned from borrowing books until you’ve paid your fines.
- If payment is not made on time, you may be subject to reminder fees and/or your outstanding amount may be referred to the Danish Debt Agency.
Compensations for lost or damaged materials
You will be charged a compensation fee set by the library at the price for a new copy, if you damage or lose a loan.
Make sure to contact the library if you lose or damage a book to avoid extra charges:
- Contact the staff at the main library or Medborgercentret
- Call the library at 38 21 18 00 Monday to Friday from 10 am to 5 pm.
- Send us an e-mail to bibioteket-sag@frederiksberg.dk
If you return the book within 1 month after you paid the compensation, the library will refund the compensation.
How to pay the fine or compensation
You will receive an invoice in your e-Boks from Frederiksberg Municipality or by letter if you are charged with a fine or required to pay compensation. If you are under 18 your parent/ guardian will be charged on your behalf.
4 different payment options
- In person by booking an appointment at the Citizen Service Centre at Frederiksberg Rådhus.
- Here at our website by logging in to your profile. You find the payment link under ‘Gebyrer and erstatninger’
- Via the app Biblioteket under ‘Mellemværender’
- By transferring the money via online banking using the payment ID written in the bottom of the invoice you get in e-Boks from Frederiksberg Municipality.
If you fail to pay your fine on time, you risk extra charges and that your fine is passed on to be managed by The Danish Debt Collection (Gældsstyrelsen).
If you need to pay for someone else
You can contact the Citizen Service Centre and ask them to send you a MobilePay request, if you want to pay for someone you are not officially financially responsible for, e.g. a parent or a child.
